Apr 26, 2018-Shrinkhala Khatiwada, the newly-anointed Miss Nepal World, speaking at a function on Tuesday at Hetauda, her home town, said that she aims to become a role model and not just a model.

It was Khatiwada’s first trip back to her hometown upon winning the title. Khatiwada was crowned the winner by her predecessor, Nikita Chandak, at the Miss Nepal finale held in the Capital on April 11.

Speaking during the function, Khatiwada reminisced about her journey so far. “I remember when I used to walk alongside my mom, Munu Sigdel [an incumbent member of the province’s parliament], people would say, ‘Oh, you look like a Miss Nepal!’ and this made me want to compete in the pageant. Now that the dream has come true, it feels that the surest way to success is perseverance.”

At the function, Khatiwada also thanked her well-wishers and relatives.

Khatiwada, a graduate of architecture from the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk, went to her home and stayed there for two months during the time of the elections, in which both her parents were contending. “That was when I told them, ‘the next time I come to Hetauda, I will come back as Miss Nepal,’” Khatiwada said. “Mom was worried—conscious that if I fail, it will make me unhappy; but that, as it turns out, has not been the case.”

Khatiwada also argued that the beauty pageant should not be associated with only glamour. “This is clearly not just about glamour. It’s more about knowledge, skill, diligence and confidence,” Khatiwada said. “The training sessions on the months leading up to the finale were really fruitful—we received invaluable life lessons from successful public figures like Anuradha Koirala, Bhawani Rana, and Narayan Wagle, among others.”

Khatiwada said that she now aims to stake a claim to the Miss World title. “I think the government should be forthcoming, because it’s a matter of national pride. Even if I could just win the Beauty with Purpose title, I would comfortably be placed in the top ten. I aspire to bring back home at least one title.”

In the days after her crowning, Khatiwada’s family background drew significant public attention. Her father, Birodh Khatiwada, represents CPN (UML) at the national parliament, whereas, her mother is a member of the provincial parliament. But the current Miss Nepal has no plans to directly associate with politics as yet. “I think one doesn’t necessarily have to be a politician to make good things happen. One can do a lot of things even while staying out of the political game. Politics is not a dirty game, as the cliché goes. I think politics helps one differentiate the good from the bad.”

Khatiwada also said that she won’t be involved in the film industry. “My expertise is in engineering. And I am not particularly adept at acting or dancing, so I don’t think I would get into showbiz,” she said.
