Newly crowned Miss USA Asya Branch told Insider that she believes AK-47 and "other weapons along those lines should be left to our military".


"There is no need for civilians to have such weapons," added Branch, who represented Mississippi.
Branch advocated the second amendment during Monday's pageant, saying she did not believe all guns should be banned in the US.


"There are many guns where I come from - people like to hunt," she told Insider. "It's important that we really enforce gun safety and make sure people have permits."

When it came to her last word at the Miss USA pageant, Asya Branch was asked to speak about gun laws. And she wasn't afraid to explain her support for the second addition.
"I think it's important that we don't ban guns because obviously people are going to find a way to get what they want," said Branch, who represented Mississippi, on stage when she was among the Monday night last five candidates. "But I think it's our second right to amend, and I think we just need more security."
Branch's words caught the attention of Twitter and various media outlets - especially after she was announced as the winner just minutes later.

But the new Miss USA told Insiders that she doesn't believe Americans should buy any kind of gun
"I think AK-47s and other weapons along those lines should be left to our military," said Branch. "There is no need for civilians to have such weapons."
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban, which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994, expired in 2004. Congress has in recent years despite a wave of mass shootings in the country and the fact that a Politico / Morning Consult poll found that nearly 70% of all American voters would support a new ban on assault weapons.
During her last word at the Miss USA pageant, Branch noted that she had grown up in a gun house and "learned how to load, how to shoot, and how to protect guns at a young age."

"As our second right of amendment, we obviously have the right to bear arms," ​​she said. "And where I'm from there are a lot of guns - people love to hunt. It's important that we really enforce gun safety and make sure people have permits and are legally able to own a gun."
"It's just about making sure that people who put guns in their hands are able to be safe and that they are using them for the right reasons," she added. "Go hunting, shoot targets, rather use it as a sport. Let's not harm each other."
Branch made headlines in her first week as Miss USA

The pageant queen also caught Twitter's attention when an Instagram photo of her singing at a Donald Trump rally in 2018 reappeared.
Branch told Insider that she was contractually obliged to sing the national anthem at the rally when she was Miss Mississippi for the Miss America organization, which is separate from Miss USA.
"I think what people often miss is the fact that, as a Miss Mississippi in the Miss America system, I was contracted to work for the organization," she said. "Part of my contract required me to perform and this [Trump rally] was one of them."
"And I think any opportunity to sing the national anthem is a real honor, regardless of where it takes place," she added.
