More than 150 guests filled St. Theresa Catholic Church’s new facility Sunday afternoon for the Miss Alabama Send-Off Party in honor of Jennifer Procter, Miss Alabama. This special event, hosted by the Miss Leeds Area Committee, gave family, friends and the greater Leeds area the opportunity to share their love and excitement with Jessica as she prepares to leave for Atlantic City and compete for the Miss America Crown. Proctor will leave on her Miss America journey next week to enjoy all of the festivities and events leading up to the Miss America Pageant on Sunday, Sept. 10.

During the festivities, Mayor David Miller presented Jessica with a key to the city along with a proclamation naming August 20 as “Jessica Procter Day”. Proctor received another proclamation from State Representative Dickie Drake and the State House of Representatives. Ms. Nan Teninbaum, the President of the Miss Alabama Board of Directors, spoke briefly and thanked the Miss Leeds Area Committee for their hard work. Teninbaum will also be traveling with Proctor. Jessica Proctor spent the majority of the afternoon greeting people, signing autographs, receiving gifts from various people and posing for photos.

Proctor was very proud to have Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Jessica Baeder from Auburn who was the first Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen to win a Miss America’s Outstanding Teen crown in attendance. Miss Leeds Area 2018 - Bailey Kennon, Miss Leeds Area Outstanding Teen 2018 – Zoe’ Champion and numerous past Miss Leeds Area winners, former Miss Leeds Area Outstanding Teens, state preliminary winners, sorority sisters, family members, friends and greater Leeds area residents were also in attendance.

Jessica Proctor is the daughter of Doff and Laurel Procter of Tuscaloosa and a student at the University of Alabama majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Psychology. She began her pageant career at the age of seventeen. Proctor was named second runner up in the Miss Tuscaloosa Outstanding Teen Pageant, Miss Birmingham Outstanding Teen Pageant and the Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen. She was crowned Miss West Central Outstanding Teen and went on to be crowned Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen 2013. After serving her year in this capacity, she began competing in Miss Alabama preliminaries. She then served as Miss Center Point 2015, Miss Tuscaloosa 2016 and Miss Leeds Area 2017 before receiving the Miss Alabama 2017 crown in June on her third time to compete in the Miss Alabama Pageant.

Leeds is very well known in the Miss Alabama circle. Jessica Proctor is the seventh Miss Leeds Area to win the Miss Alabama title. She is the fourth Miss Leeds Area of the last seven Miss Leeds Area girls to win the Miss Alabama crown under the direction of Sandra McGuire, Miss Leeds Area Committee Director. Other Miss Leeds Area Miss Alabama winners include Caitlin Brunell 2014, Chandler Champion 2013, Courtney Porter 2011, Deidra Downs 2004, Kalyn Chapman 1993 and Paige Phillips 1980. Two of these girls went on to win the Miss America crown – Deidra Downs and Paige Phillips.

The current Miss Leeds Area Committee includes Sandra McGuire, Gary Hamm, Sherry Sublett, Jarrod Landers, Amy Cummings, Donna Coates, Anne Glidewell, Lindsay Pendergrass and Cristina Allen. In a telephone interview with McGuire, she said, “Jessica feels ready and so loved by everyone! I see her as the next Miss America!”

I have personally gotten to know Jessica over the last year and she is truly as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She is a precious Christian young lady who works tirelessly and serves others with tremendous effort. Jessica’s personal platform is “Step Up to the Plate: Decreasing Food Insecurity”, which provides people with opportunities to fill the plate of the hungry. She fights hunger by organizing canned food drives, speaking engagements, fundraisers, encouraging others to volunteer in local efforts and establishing food recovery programs and partners with West Alabama Food Bank and Feeding America. Jessica also has a beautiful voice and has performed at numerous Leeds area functions over the past year or so.

Jessica will spend the next few days in mock interviews in preparation and packing for the trip that includes a wardrobe of appearance clothes needed for the two weeks of activities while she will be in Atlantic City. Jessica was presented with luggage from Bass by the Outlet Shops of Grand River this week. Her clothing is sponsored by The Clothes Tree by Deborah and Gus Mayer.

Most people think it’s all about beauty when it comes to these pageants, but the ability to earn scholarship money is the driving force for many young women. Jessica has won scholarship money with each crown along the way and now looks forward to winning the Miss America crown and scholarships.

The Miss America Organization is a 501(c)4 non-profit organization and the nation’s largest scholarship provider to young women.
