Karson Pennington was crowned Miss Georgia and will compete for the title of Miss America in Connecticut.
Karson Pennington just landed the job of a lifetime – and an even bigger one could be in her future.

Last weekend, Pennington was named Miss Georgia and will now head to the Miss America competition in Connecticut. Due to COVID-19, an official date has not been released but it is expected to take place in December, according to Pennington.

“This has been a dream of mine for so many years,” she said.

Karson Pennington (right) had been crowned Little Miss prior to the Miss Augusta Scholarship Fantasy Parade on December 10, 2005, in Augusta, Ga. Joining her are Madison Doolittle, Tiny Miss (from left) and Alexandria Meyers, Wee Miss.

The 2016 Lakeside High School graduate began competing with the Miss America organization at the age of 10 in its princess program. In addition to being Miss Lakeside in 2016, she was also crowned Miss UGA in January while attending the University of Georgia. She graduated from the university in May with three degrees – a master’s in political science and international affairs and bachelor’s degrees in history and political science. She is now pursuing her doctorate in political science and international affairs at the university.

The Augusta native said the Miss America program is no longer a beauty pageant as many have perceived it over the 100 years it has been in existence.

“We are applying for a job,” she said. “It’s based on our brains.”

The UGA Georgettes dance team, with Jace Combs (from left), Karson Pennington and Brynna Allen, who are all from Augusta, attended the 2018 Border Bash at the Augusta Common.

Participating in the Miss America program throughout her life has earned Pennington thousands of dollars in scholarships including the $15,000 scholarship that comes with her Miss Georgia title.

But it’s more than money and a title for Pennington. The long-term effect it has had on her confidence and the opportunities it has brought her have also been beneficial.

“I don’t know that I would have had the confidence to do this and that will stick with me for the rest of my life,” she said.

Pennington and other contestants for Miss America will report to Connecticut Labor Day weekend for the 100th anniversary celebration of the scholarship program. She will also be preparing for the competition, which similar to the Miss Georgia event will feature interviews, evening gown wear and talent competition. In 2018, the organization ended its swimsuit competition.

As a lifelong dancer, Pennington will showcase her talent. For the Miss Georgia competition she tap danced to Michael Buble’s rendition of “Can’t Buy Me Love.”
