The oft criticised Miss Grand Cambodia beauty pageant – which came under a storm of criticism earlier this year over accusations of ‘obscene and inappropriate’ costumes – is now under new management
The organisation has announced that former manager In Sophin has stepped down and, in his place, Ms. Im Sokunthea has become the new National Director and Miss Som Sarapech is the new Vice President of Miss Grand Cambodia.
Outgoing manager In Sophin was forced to make a public apology to Cambodians in September after he was admonished in a meeting with The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts who had summoned him after PM Hun Sen had joined in the chorus of disapproval over a controversial TV broadcast, that was described as ‘a serious insult to the good traditional culture of Cambodia’
Poipet and Bavet cities complained that the costumes ‘representing’ their cities glamourized gambling – with the costumes being based around playing cards and dice.
Meanwhile, Stung Treng provincial authorities launched an official complaint concerning the costume (below) representing the province, in which a woman – partially revealing both her breasts and genital area – was displayed as being a representative of the province.
Provincial authorities stated ‘This is a serious insult to the good traditional culture of Cambodia, especially the honor of our Cambodian women.
Mr In had also faced ire after he described a contestant as being ethnically ‘Vietnamese-Khmer Kampuchea Krom’.
