VCU grad placed in top two of Miss USA pageant

Caelynn Miller-Keyes (Miss North Carolina USA)

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Caelynn Miller-Keyes who is Miss North Carolina USA 2018 and a Virginia Commonwealth University grad placed in the top 2 of Monday night's Miss USA pageant.

Miller-Keyes graduated from VCU with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.

The North Carolina native stood next to Miss Nevada and Miss Nebraska, with Miss Nebraska taking the crown at the end of the evening.

She said during her time as Miss North Carolina USA, she plans to visit several different children's hospitals and sit with patients and their parents.

Miller-Keyes said doctors told her parents she would likely pass away when she was diagnosed with encephalitis at age two. She added that the doctors told her parents she would have only a ten percent chance of ever walking again if she did survive.

She wants to use her story to inspire children and their families who nay feel hopeless in similar situations.

In addition, she said she wants to continue improving Title IX policies foe sexual assault survivors.
