Miss North Carolina Morgan Romano is undergoing a title change, as she is crowned the new Miss USA.
On Friday, January 27, a successional crowning event took place in Auburn, Alabama. Newly crowned Miss Universe R’Bonney Gabriel passed the title of Miss USA 2022 to Morgan Romano.
“Heart full of gratitude. I’m all yours, USA,” Romano wrote in an Instagram post.
As Morgan Romano steps into the spotlight after years of competing in pageants, let’s get to know the new queen better.
MORGAN ROMANO STARTED COMPETING IN PAGEANTS AGE 20
Morgan Romano, a chemical engineer from Concord, entered the pageant world when she was around 20 years old. She first competed in Miss South Carolina USA 2019 where she placed in the top 10. The event took place in December 2018. Romano, who is now 25, would have been around 20 when she first competed in a pageant.
After competing for the title of Miss South Carolina, Romano competed tried her luck at the Miss North Carolina 2021 pageant. It paid off and she was named 2nd runner up that year.
On January 29, 2022, at High Point Theater in North Carolina, Morgan Romano was named Miss North Carolina 2022. This allowed her to compete for the title of Miss USA later in the year. The competition took place on October 4, 2022 and Romano placed 1st runner-up behind R’Bonney Gabriel.
MORGAN IS PASSIONATE ABOUT WOMEN IN STEM
Morgan Romano is an advocate of STEM education, encouraging young women to become involved with science.
Romano attended University of South Carolina where she obtained a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering in 2020. She is currently an Application Engineer at R.E. Mason in Charlotte, NC.
Besides pageantry, she spends her free time volunteering with Project Scientist, an after-school program providing a STEM curriculum to young girls.
R’BONNEY GABRIEL CROWNED MORGAN ROMANO
As per pageantry protocol, when R’Bonney Gabriel claimed the Miss Universe crown, she handed over her Miss USA crown. This means that the 1st runner-up, Morgan Romano, stepped into her place.
It was only fitting, then, that Gabriel was on-site.
“Time to pass on the USA crown,” Gabriel said in an Instagram post before the event.

NORTH CAROLINA HOLDS MULTIPLE MISS USA CROWNS
North Carolina is joining the ranks for the states who have the most Miss USA wins under the belt.
Texas is the most successful state, with nine winners of the Miss USA crown. California follows with six, followed by D.C., New York, Hawaii, Illinois, and now North Carolina, with four each.
The past two decades have seen North Carolina make their mark on the Miss USA map. Previous winners include Chelsea Cooley (2005), Kristen Dalton (2009), and the late Cheslie Kryst (2019), who shockingly passed away a year ago.
