MANILA - Reigning Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa and Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere of France were spotted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Saturday morning as the beauty queens were set to attend some Miss Universe events here.

Nel-Peters and Mittenaere arrived in the country a week after Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said she wants to host the Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines in time for the reopening of island paradise Boracay.

"Ang gusto kong tagline, 'the most beautiful island in the world welcomes the most beautiful women in the universe,'" Teo told reporters in a press conference in Boracay on April 26, the day the island was closed to tourists for a 6-month rehabilitation.
'Closing Time' in Boracay as 6-month shutdown begins
Teo said she was in the process of sealing the deal to host the Miss Universe in the Philippines for the fourth time.
"We need $6 million for the rights, and another $6 million for the accommodations, flights, logistics, but all those can be shouldered by sponsors," Teo said.
Would the Philippines want to host the Miss Universe again?
The Philippines last hosted the international beauty pageant in Manila in January 2017 when Mittenaere was crowned as the successor of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach.
The Miss Universe pageants were also held in the Philippines in 1974 and 1994.
