Intending to shape the way women are accepted as world standards evolve, the Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago preliminary round was held on Saturday night at the Naparima Bowl in San Fernando.

Twenty-three young women participated in the preliminary round for a chance to represent this country at the international pageant in November.

The show, under the umbrella of new franchise holder Crowns and Sashes Pageant Training Academy and Production House (C&S), attracted professional women including medical doctors, lawyers, and physiologists.

Following a six-week boot camp, the show featured the delegates in three segments—the introduction to their beauty with a purpose cause, swimsuits, and evening gowns.

C&S executive chairman and director of Global Franchises Stephen Jones said, “At the finals, you would hear a lot more of their critical thinking…we are not fixated on body type, height or colour; it is about celebrating the women and the young men who participate in pageants for their essence, brain, their passion for working communities. For Miss Universe being an exclusive organisation, all women must be celebrated. At the selection, we looked at what is more than your body type, what more are you bringing to the table? So this is more an open space for women to come and step into the light finally.”

The finals will be staged at Queen’s Hall next Sunday, September 11.

After the preliminary round, the top 12 will be chosen. There will be further cuts made which will see the group brought down to six, from which Miss Trinidad and Tobago Universe 2023 will be crowned.

Jones added, that the Miss Universe organisation has announced for 2023 plans to make the show more inclusive with married women being allowed to compete. He is pleased with this decision.

“The world has evolved so much to make room for young people; this is one of those dynamics that has done that (inclusivity). I look forward as we create space for inclusivity that we also create room for the age difference because if you are talking about career women, the career women are also more mature adult women who are in the world of work. I am hoping that in time to come we see the 30 and 32-year-old women in the competition.”

The pageant, which is in its 71st year would see a T&T delegate on the world stage after a three-year absence. Trinidad and Tobago delegates were crowned Miss Universe in 1977 with Janelle Penny Commissiong and Wendy Fitzwilliam in 1998.

T&T also hosted the competition in 1999 at Chaguaramas.
